Colwyn Bay
The Colwyn Bay office is one of the smaller offices Mott MacDonald
has in the UK, with 12 permanent staff and several other staff
members who divide their time between this office and Mott
MacDonald’s Altrincham office. For such a small office there is a
fairly high proportion of graduates, there are currently five
graduates in the office (civil/structural/geotechnical), with the
most experienced graduates having been here for just over two
years. With all the graduates being in at a similar stage in their
careers there is a good team spirit between them. This is good as
everyone can easily ask each other for advice before going to a
more senior figure.
Our workload covers a broad spectrum both in disciplines and magnitude. Designing a major section of the Manchester hospitals is at the top of the scale which ranges down through Conway Quay redevelopment with its associated cycle/pedestrian rail bridges, slope stability schemes in rock and softer ground, culvert/retaining wall repairs, drain collapses beneath refuse tips, T.I.A’s, narrow gauge railway bridges and bridge inspections all the way down to comments about collapsing porches!
There is a healthy social aspect to the office, over the past year there have been sport and social outings to see the ‘Touring Car Championships’ at Oulton Park, ten-pin bowling games and also we have been out for a couple of meals. Four of us from the office have also teamed up with another local business to form a 6-a-side football team which plays in a local league every week.
Colwyn Bay itself is a lively seaside market town that hosts one of the biggest populations along the North Wales coast. It is located between Llandudno and Rhyl, and nearly all the leisure amenities expected are available, including several golf courses, shopping centres, multiplex cinemas and ten-pin bowling. Colwyn Bay’s central location and its close proximity to the A55 dual carriageway means that a whole host of attractions are easily accessible. Both the shopping centres of Chester and the picturesque views and walks in Snowdonia, and the Isle of Anglesey are only a 35 minute drive away. Colwyn Bay also has a main line railway station, and going over to Ireland from Holyhead is a pretty simple journey.
