Matthew Pierpoint
I first decided to go into engineering as I enjoyed
maths and problem solving. I didn’t want a job where I would be
stuck doing the same old repetitive task day in day out. While studying civil engineering at Salford University I had the opportunity of gaining work experience at Mott MacDonald’s Manchester office. When I got my degree the company offered me a permanent position and I was faced with the decision of staying with Mott MacDonald or leaving to go to one of the other major consultancies. I chose to stay as I liked the atmosphere, the style of working, the pride the engineers have in their work and the desire they have to become the best. I was also attracted by the opportunity to travel. I recently went out to Ankara in Turkey to work on a project where we are technical advisor on a new airport terminal and apron – the sheer size of the development was unbelievable.
Mott MacDonald is a vibrant and growing company, with many opportunities for development for the budding engineer and planner. There are many occasions to meet other graduates and exchange ideas either through the vast range of clubs and societies that are on offer or through GiGi, a dedicated graduate site on the company’s intranet which acts as a forum for discussion. I am actually on the Manchester office’s social committee and help arrange activities such as monthly football games, walking trips to the Peak District and the occasional trip down to the local pub at the end of the road.
