Building services

Every day is different! Depending on the projects I am involved in, I will get involved in site visits, client meetings, meetings with architects and other professionals, site surveys and factory visits.

One project I have been involved with in the last two years, has been a large civil justice centre with innovative architecture and structure, green and sustainable energy solutions and strict acoustic criteria. Fitting the services in around these issues has required close cooperation with the structural team, the architects and the acoustic consultants.

Other projects have been the utility services and medical gases to a hospital, overseas site surveys and inspections, industrial, process and clean room ventilation and conditioning.

My time is largely divided between corresponding with people by email, letter, fax and phone and working on design solutions with my colleagues and attending meetings. It is very much a people-friendly environment and good communication skills are essential!
The engineering itself is also of a more creative nature than many of the other disciplines, as the solutions are so varied and new technology is evolving all the time, and with such varied projects the same solution can not often be used twice!
