Foundations and geotechnics

Sarah Carley on siteDesign and build project for an earthwork remediation scheme
The work we undertake in foundations and geotechnics is extremely varied, from director through to graduate level. Engineers and geologists work alongside each other to deliver solutions to a wide range of problems, both in the office and out on site. Many projects involve close liaison with either the client or contractor, resulting in exposure to both construction and commercial issues, as well as the design issues encountered on a day to day basis.

As a graduate you could be undertaking a variety of roles such as designing stabilisation schemes for earthworks, designing pile groups for structure or bridge foundations, supervising ground investigations and interpreting the data, or supervising construction works. Projects can range from the design of a small retaining structure to problems which require a more complex form of analysis involving numerical modelling techniques.

An example of a recent high profile project in which we have played a key role is the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport, which will provide the airport with an additional passenger handling capacity of up to 35 million passengers per year.
