Highways

Robert Legg on siteMott MacDonald’s work in the highways sector has shifted towards road maintenance in recent years. There are also opportunities to be involved in new-build highways schemes both within the UK and worldwide.

Currently the majority of maintenance work in the UK is undertaken as part of the maintenance commissions Mott MacDonald holds with the Highways Agency. Graduate engineers are involved in simple surfacing schemes, through junction improvements, up to complex structural assessments. In developing schemes, graduate engineers are required to use their initiative and experience; however guidance is always on hand from specialists to get the best design and ensure that safety and environmental legislation is complied with for each scheme.

Mott MacDonald is also actively promoting innovative products, design and services. An example of innovation is the promotion of passively safe design, where an item such as a signpost’s hazard severity is reduced by use of innovative products, rather than installing safety fencing, which is seen as additional hazard. A communication service is also provided to clients, getting the message of delays due to roadwork to road users through websites, email alerts, radio adverts and SMS messaging
