Railways

Nigel Plummer hang-glidingI’ve worked in railways for three years now and have been involved in quite a wide range of exciting dynamic projects. I started in the area of railway safety assessment looking at the tilting systems on the new Virgin Pendolino trains. This was followed by work in our Permanent-Way department designing an upgrade to part of the West-Coast Mainline railway near Manchester.

I’ve also worked with our experienced rolling stock engineers in the Derby office who carry out rail vehicle assessment and Rolling Stock consultancy services and spent a period in the Bristol office working on a large multi-disciplinary project looking at various options for increasing the capacity of the railway between London and Stansted airport.

My current role is a Railway Notified Body which means that I help to assess conformity to European specifications for parts of the railway such as the signalling, civil and track infrastructure, and energy power systems.

Railways cover nearly all aspects of engineering which means that you are constantly meeting new people and learning new things which makes it a really interesting area to work in.
