Structures

Rob Sayce on siteThe typical work undertaken by the structures department would include, but not be limited to, concrete and steel design work, site inspections of existing structures for maintenance or safety assessments and refurbishment design for existing buildings. The majority of design is carried out by hand calculation using basic engineering principles. On structurally complex projects, computer aided design is more frequently employed. The level of this can vary from basic 2D analysis to detailed 3D models, accurately modelling structural performance. There appears to be no limit to the complexity that a 3D model can analyse, but engineering principles are always used to quantify output.

Once a project enters the construction phase, there is still a role for the Mott MacDonald structural engineer. We offer advice on the construction process and any contractor proposed changes to design on site. This requires quick and clear thinking, but is a rewarding role as you proudly watch your contribution to the building’s design rise rapidly around you!

The additional work carried out by a Mott MacDonald structural engineer could also range from timber design to report writing. Conveying structural engineering ideas and processes in written form that can be understood by all involved within the project is essential and a quality required for the complete engineer!

Lastly, you are encouraged to use your initiative and to ask plenty of questions. This promotes the good teamwork and individuals required to deliver quality, innovative project solutions to our increasingly demanding clients.
